Manchester based singer-songwriter, Dee Rae, has released new single ‘Purple and Red’. With artistic influences including Elliott Smith and Wet Leg, Dee Rae has brought together indie, rock and gentle folk to create a peaceful soundtrack to exploring identity, feeling lost and navigating the world your own way.
Sharing their thoughts via TikTok on release day, Dee Rae explained ‘Purple and Red’ is “a statement on authenticity, following your own gut and direction”.
An introspective and personal reflection, the textural build up mid-way through the song feels reminiscent of ‘Hozier's Yell' - a viral phrase referring to a climactic and cathartic moment that feels like it should be in a Hozier song. The rousing instrumental introduced with a crash of drums disappears as quickly as it arrived, a fleeting yet passionate moment of euphoria. Known for their authentic and relatable social media presence, the non-binary artist, Dee Rae compared this moment to the feeling of dressing authentically and feeling at home in your gender identity.
Full of storytelling lyricism, ‘Purple and Red' allows space for the listener to attach their own meaning. Dee Rae's soft vocals and honest lyrics; “she'll never tell you because her song's undefined / after she's gone they will leave her behind / a child with a woman in her mind” compliment the beautiful instrumentation throughout, with a reassuringly repetitive electric guitar motif opening the track. Dee Rae's folk music inspiration is clear in the guitar textures and serene harmonies from violinist Alana Howes, who's floating lines close the track.
'Purple and Red' is an emotive gift of 03:40 to reflect; permission to be yourself and tell your own story.
Dee Rae is going on tour in May, with headline shows in Leeds, London and Manchester. More information can be found here.
