Brighton singer-songwriter frances mistry continues to develop her distinctive discography with latest single ‘something has to give’. Following on from previous 2025 single, ‘new hands to hold’, Mistry demonstrates yet again how in tune she is with the world around her.
As soon as you press play, there is a captivating introduction to a delicate, yet, impactful instrumental arrangement. When Mistry described her work as “galaxy dream pop” on her Spotify bio, she encompassed her art perfectly. There is something dreamy about all of her work, particularly with ‘something has to give’.
Her vibrant vocals accompanied by an intricately produced melody provides an ethereal essence that encapsulates a striking sentiment that so many will resonate with. The primary message, as the title may suggest, is hosting a range of emotions to living in a repetitive situation where there is no real shift or change. Mistry talks of change “funded by billionaires”, questioning whether this is really change at all.
With ‘something has to give’ being less than three minutes in duration, it is a lot shorter than the average song. However, this isn’t a negative thing at all. Instead, it’s short but sweet nature will draw you in and you’ll be hitting repeat very quickly to fully grasp everything the track has to offer. If you’re a fan of acts like Hannah Cole and Sunday (1994), then you’ll adore frances mistry, and you’ll find great familiarity when listening to ‘something has to give’.
