'Namcy': Courting's French Exit And Irish Goodbye

Liverpool band Courting are keeping us on our toes with both a single release and their newest album, ‘Lust For Life, Or: How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story’, which were both released on March 14th.

Courting has crafted a track that feels like sifting through early 2000s nostalgia with ‘Namcy’. Clocking in at just over three minutes, the song is a dizzying blend of guitars, frantic lyricism, sincerity and satire.

Frontman Sean Murphy-O’Neill sings of a romance in the opening verse:  “Just two absolute beginners / And, oh, we gotta find some place to hide / A ballroom? A car? / You're oh so kisserable, so kisserable”. The delivery is urgent, almost breathless, as if the words are tumbling out faster than he can keep up.

The chorus is catchy and addictive - "Get me away from here, I’m dying" toes the line perfectly between between melodrama and deadpan irony. It’s a feeling that runs throughout the song, as lyrics unravel in a rapid-fire list of places, phrases, and fleeting emotions. Lines like “Give me somewhere to hide / French exit, Irish goodbye” feel like the internal monologue of someone desperate to escape but unsure where to go. The clichés sprinkled through the song are the cherry on top of the satire of pop.

Musically, ‘Namcy’ leans into scrappy, garage-rock energy, with a melody reminiscent of Weezer at their most carefree. As a standalone single, ‘Namcy’ is a perfect picture of what Courting does best: taking familiar indie rock tropes and twisting them into something fresh and chaotic. Their ability to be descriptive without really saying what they mean feels confusing and intriguing. It’s both a throwback and a step forward, proving that nostalgia doesn’t have to mean standing still.

The band is currently on a UK tour, where you can hear ‘Namcy’ and other tunes live. You can find tickets here
