Salford’s Super Market Serve Up Delicious New Alt-Pop Banger ‘Cereal’

Unconventional, charming, and oozing with a capitalist-charged satire unlike many other emerging pop artists, Salford duo Super Market advertise themselves as the “one stop shop for all of your music needs”. Their latest single ‘Cereal’ proves just that, delivering a pallet of inspired sounds while pushing back on the institutional norms of society that many will resonate with.

Establishing themselves as a robust brand through their polished social media aesthetics and a website that ironically mimics the formality of any reputable retailer, the duo dons slacks and suit jackets — a homage, perhaps, to the corporate dominance of the '80s that so distinctly influences their sound.

Cereal’ immediately hits you with bold instructions that showcase the demanding, and at times demoralising, nature of modern-day society. While lyrics such as “Being poor is a choice / If I stopped living for me, then I might afford some joy” might come across as strong as the morning espressos they satirically fantasise about, they are steeped in the lived experiences of many struggling to make ends meet and find happiness outside of the four walls of the workplace.

The track comes as part of a bundle deal, alongside their single ‘Instant Coffee’, another distinct banger that carries undertones of other experimental, hypnagogic pop bands like The Garden. With both songs turning otherwise mundane consumables into the subjects of jovial, unforgettable anthems, the duo is bound to leave a charmingly playful mark on the northern music scene.

Though the self-proclaimed “business tycoons” are still scaling their musical venture, one thing is certain: backing the Salford-based duo now means supporting a boldly eccentric and concept-driven future for the maturing world of alternative pop.
