Alien Chicks Continue Their Mighty Momentum with Latest Single ‘Mr Muscle’

Mr Muscle’ is the third single taken from London post-punk trio Alien Chicks’ upcoming EP ‘Forbidden Fruit’. Set to be released on May 9th, their sophomore EP is already shaping up to be an unforgettable one. Following in the individualistic footsteps of previously released Donkeyhead’ and ‘Babe’, this newest addition continues Alien Chicks’ observational approach to lyrics, with their feelings towards these observations being equally as evident.

A thunderous tempo formed by guitar, bass and drums fill your ears as you hit play. Stefan Parker-Steele and Martha Daniels keep this driving foundation throughout the track, which is just shy of two and a half minutes in duration. Even though the track is shorter than most being released, there is a lot packed in, including time signature changes between verses, choruses and the outro. These changes in speed and style provide impressive and immersive intricacy that will have you pressing repeat in no time.

Josef Lindsay’s distinctive vocals are heard not long into the song with the opening lyrics, “I’m tired of counting down and the ridiculous regiments.” Immediately, there is a sense of frustration, and this only continues with further lyrics such as, “every day mimics the previous, which mirrors the next.” This latest single, ‘Mr Muscle’ is titled after a cleaning product with the same name, and the chorus points to more of these, “Detol / Febreeze / Mr Muscle / Bang dirt is gone.

The song isn’t about cleaning products, though. These act as a simple substitute for typically boring discussions like the weather. The underlying undertones of ‘Mr Muscle’ is that of the monotonous and mundane repetitiveness that life can hold. Alien Chicks capture this feeling of boredom and mould it into an eclectic and erratic form.

Mr Muscle’ is post-punk perfection. With vigorous vocals accompanying equally as rapid instrumentals, there’s a lot that will draw listeners in. While the subject focuses on the, sometimes, boring nature of routine, there’s nothing predictable about this song or Alien Chicks. Their innate ability to encapsulate the feelings of so many people, and create musical versions of this, is something to be applauded.
