Last week, art-pop duo Magdalena Bay took to the triple J studio to make their ‘Like A Version’ debut. The band, composed of lead singer Mica Tenenbaum and guitarist/secondary vocalist Matthew Lewin, has had an immense year as their sophomore album ‘Imaginal Disk’ was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its release in August 2024.
After delivering a captivating performance of their explosive, avant-garde hit ‘Image’, they took on the challenge of covering David Bowie’s iconic ‘Ashes to Ashes’.
While reworking such a legendary tune is a massive risk, the duo showed no signs of uncertainty or wavering in their performance, as they confidently executed a faithful rendition of the glam-rock staple. Artistically, their cover remains a close copy of the original, with the only major distinction being Mica’s higher vocal pitch, which she utilises as a tool to infuse the track with an added layer of surrealism. Armed with a keytar, she gives her all into the microphone, captivating listeners as they watch her face warp with passion.
In a post-performance interview with triple J, the pair note that the song is one that they “took a lot of inspiration from” praising its “weird, experimental” sound. While Bowie pushed the boundaries of rock to incorporate a level of flamboyance and theatricality, Magdalena Bay are pushing the boundaries of traditional pop in a similar spirit, as their innovative production opens up a new realm of ethereal sound.
